As we approach 2026, it is worthwhile to investigate which job search strategies will be effective in the new year. Revision Resume continuously learns new skills and strategies for job seekers. Here is what we expect in 2026.
Proactive Networking is Advantageous

Although many job seekers think their resume will do all the work, that isn't realistic. A solid resume is necessary, but often pairing that document with networking and self-branding is what leads to a successful job search.
Nurture your professional relationships through LinkedIn. The holidays offer a nice opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and industry peers by sending a quick message of well-wishes. Provide a short update on yourself and ask your contacts how they are doing. You may find a role that isn't being advertised, or a previous colleague may be able to vouch for you in a competitive job market. Sometimes a simple conversation leads to a new opportunity!
Tailored Resumes are Vital
The days of the "spray and pray" method are long over. Although it is tempting to get on Indeed and submit 30 resumes all at once, it is not likely to yield any results. Instead, you must tweak your resume for each role you apply for.
Closely read the job description and highlight significant keywords. Then, incorporate the keywords you identified into your resume. Be honest, and only include keywords that you have experience with and can support in an interview.
Make sure you don't overlook the following items:
Years of Experience (if specified on the job posting)
Education, Licenses, or Certification Requirements
Software or Hardware Knowledge
Industry or Market-Specific Knowledge (Customer Support, Project Coordination, Root-Cause Analysis, Social Media Marketing, etc).
Update Your Skills for Success

As you read job postings that are of interest to you, see if there are any gaps in your skills or experience. If so, look into ways to fill that gap.
Have a missing technical skill? Consider taking an online class that provides certification. Even a volunteer role in your field can help strengthen your resume and expand your skill set.
A candidate who is proactive in increasing their knowledge is always of interest to a hiring manager. So, ensure that you are upskilling and staying current with trends in your industry.
Age Discrimination Will Continue to be an Issue

Updating your skills can help you avoid age discrimination, but it is also necessary to consider what dates and details you include on your resume.
Keep in mind that your resume doesn't have to be an autobiography. Only the last 10-15 years of work experience should be included.
If, however, there is a relevant role in your history that is older, you can include it in a separate section called "Previous Work Experience," and remove the dates.
Here are some other guidelines to avoid showing your age:
Only include dates on educational experiences that you completed within the last 5 years.
Don't list any dates on your resume before the year 2000.
Match the years of experience to the number listed on the job posting. For instance, if the company is seeking a person with 10+ years of experience, use that language. Indicate you have 10+ years of experience within your Executive Summary (even if you have 30+ years of experience).
The job market is expected to be competitive in 2026, due to economic uncertainty. Try to be patient, as hiring is expected to be slower, and recent layoffs mean experienced workers and entry-level workers may be competing for the same roles. Utilizing the above tips can help you stand out as a job candidate.
