Is it Really Necessary to Write a Thank-You Note After an Interview?

Revision Resume highly recommends writing a thank-you note after each interview. We refer to the post-interview thank-you note as a value proposition letter (VPL) because we believe it is an opportunity to go beyond just thanking the interviewer for their time. A value proposition letter allows the job candidate to showcase why they would be the best candidate for the position by highlighting how they can solve a problem the company is currently facing. Consider the following ways a value proposition letter can help you.

Value Proposition Letter Makes You Memorable

With only about 40% of interviewees sending follow-up communication to their interviewer, you will stand out in a positive way. It will make the interviewer remember the interview they held with you.

Help Solve a Problem

Perhaps the interviewing team mentioned they are struggling with maintaining a program schedule and you happen to have a strength in tracking and conserving schedule. Or, maybe they indicated they are lacking anyone with knowledge of a certain software program and you have experience with that program. A value proposition letter is an opportunity to point out how you can help solve a problem the company is currently facing. This is a great way to get your foot in the door!

Show Genuine Interest in the Position

Taking the time to write a thank- you note after an interview helps show that you are genuinely interested in the position. A business wants to hire employees that they think will accept their offer and that they can retain, since they will spend time and effort training you for the new role. Showing interest in the position helps give them confidence that you are invested in the success of the company.

VPL Provides Opportunity to Mention Something You Forgot

If you got home from the interview and realized you failed to mention an important skill, the Value Proposition Letter gives you a chance to provide that information. Along the same lines, if you realize you didn't answer one of the questions as well as you could have, take the opportunity to correct your error in the value proposition letter.
